Why I love in home family sessions

Family sessions at home are an opportunity to photograph you and your family in the place you spend most of your time together. Home is where everyone (especially kids) feel the most free to be themselves. Our homes are all uniquely us and having a photographer come into your home to document some of your time there is so special. There really is no more authentic way to capture you and your people at this phase of life.

What does a family session at home look like?

A family session at home is laid back and fun. We will spend our time together playing with the kids and I will be there to photograph your family while you just enjoy time together doing the things you love to do. There are very few rules for a family session at home and this is the time that you can really decide what part of your story you want your images to tell. Do you want a session in the morning while the kids are still in their pj’s? Do you want to plan an activity that you all love to do together like cooking a favorite recipe?

How do I prepare for a session at home?

For an in home session I need a couple of good windows and some open space for you and your family to spend some time together. I will always help to find the best spots for us to be based on the light in your home. A living room, kitchen, or main bedroom are all the most common locations for us to be. Those areas should be tidy and free of a lot of extra clutter. If we are spending time in the kitchen, make sure the counter is free of unnecessary items and it is always best to make sure that the sink is empty. If you plan to spend time in the main bedroom, make sure the bed is made and the end tables are free of items that you don’t want as part of your shoot. For sessions where there are kids involved, the living space is usually a favorite spot to be together. Just tidy up the couch space and pick up any toys or items that you don’t want to see in your photos. Otherwise, I will direct you and move things around as needed.

What should we wear?

Anything you want! :) I have clients who would love to hold their sessions in the morning, coffee in hand (photo from one of these cozy sessions above). Feel free to wear what you are comfortable and feel your best in. See my what to wear guide here. What to wear guide . This guide applies to outdoor and in home sessions!

I hope this post sheds some light on what a family session at home looks like and why I think they are so special. I would love to work with you!
