When it comes to your family photo session, you have options. Here are some details about each family session type to help you decide…

It is no secret that I LOVE a family session with my clients in their homes. There is something magical about home. It is the place that life plays out with you and your people. It is in most ways, the stage for your story. Wherever you call home at this point in your life, you and your family have a special connection to that space. I also know and appreciate that some may feel overwhelmed with the thought of having a photographer in their home (if you currently feel this way, but would really like to feel comfortable with a session at home, you can read more about how little you actually need to prepare for them in a blog I put together here).

I also understand when a client has a different vision for their session and an outdoor space or studio is a better fit. There is an absolute abundance of beautiful outdoor spaces in the Pacific Northwest (thats why most of us are willing to put up with the dark and rainy months :) so I love to explore and photograph families in these spaces so much. Kids love the room to run and I love photographing them at play in the woods or a beach. I also appreciate that we have a lot of dark and cold months and a predictably scheduled studio session is sometimes the best way to get your busy family in front of the camera.

Here are some things to think about with each as well as examples of a few different types of family sessions that I offer.

Rainy Seattle late morning session at home

Documenting the everyday.

Sessions at home have a more documentary feel. We will spend time photographing you and your loved ones just being together. This is a great opportunity to plan an activity to do as a family or spend some time together in a favorite space in your home. Kids are most themselves in their own element. Capturing the details like a move from a crib to a big kid bed or the start to eating solid foods is something I promise you will never regret having documented. If you are looking to record a particular part of your story, this may be a good option for you. I often have clients book a session at home around certain occasion such as around a child’s first birthday or long distance family member visiting.

Big and Beautiful Houston Studio

This studio had a big open space for the busy boys as well as lots of options for furniture and backdrop changes.

Studio sessions are unique in that they offer an opportunity for variety and play. We don’t have to worry about the weather so if you are concerned about the thought of having to reschedule a session, this may be a great option for you. I have a couple of different studio’s that I currently like to use. If you feel like a studio session is right for you, we will discuss those options once we have your date scheduled.

Here are a couple of links to two of my favorite studio spaces available in Seattle. I am always finding new incredible spaces so this list is ever evolving :)… And YES! I do travel for sessions. I love to photograph families all over and I will often post travel dates to newsletter subscribers and followers. Please message me if you are wondering if I will be coming to your area.

Outdoor Location

A beautiful early fall afternoon in a Seattle park.

Sessions outdoors can take place at a variety of locations. Once you book a family session, we will discuss which spot is best for you. I have a long list of favorite parks, beaches, and urban locations to choose from. I love to help my clients to choose the location that suits them and who they are. When a client tells me they want something different than a pretty park setting, it is so much a part of what I do to help them figure out what that is. I am always adventuring around to find new interesting locations to offer and I am always open to talking about something new a client has in mind.
