Preparing for your in home newborn session.

I promise it is easier than you think…

I know first hand what it is like to be home with your new baby after their birth. I have 3 babies of my own (now 15, 12, and 9) and those first few days (okay, maybe months) felt like a blur. Especially once I was home with baby numbers 2 and 3. We were all adjusting and exhausted. Getting my home tidy or feeling fully like myself for photographs seemed a bit out of the realm of possibility. I also can say for certain that you will not regret taking the time to capture this part of your story. Becoming a parent (whether it’s your first baby or your 10th) is one of the most beautiful and transformative experiences in life and documenting this time is so very special. I see all the beauty of this time and I want you to be able to look back and see it too.

Home is one of the very best places to photograph your family because everyone is most comfortable in their own space. I find this especially true for children. Everyone interacting with one another in the most authentic way possible, is our goal. I do not need a lot of space for a newborn session. I just need at least one soft surface and a window with good light. I more often than not, photograph an entire newborn session in one room. Prepare a couple of favorite spaces with clean neutral (not bright) colored linens or a large blanket. A nursery is a great spot for photos if there is a window and quick tidy of surfaces goes a long way. I will move a stray water bottle or baby item if needed when I am there, but some of these items are good reminders of this time and what life was like when your baby was brand new.

Your newborn does not need several fancy outfits. We will mostly photograph your baby in a diaper or onesie and a swaddle. If you have a special outfit that you would like me to photograph your baby in, I am happy to do that. Just remember babies are perfect in the simplest things. That is the best way for me to photograph all of the fresh baby details. Parents and siblings should wear soft neutral clothing. Gowns are wonderful for new mamas to feel comfortable moving around in and are easiest if you are nursing your baby. Clothing for other family members should be soft and comfortable. Remember bright colors change the skin tones in your images so its best to stay away from those.

One thing I can tell you for certain is how fleeting these days with your new baby are. I am here to make capturing images during this time as easy and enjoyable as possible. I will be here to answer questions and provide advice every step of the way. I can’t wait to spend some time, in the comfort of your home, capturing the beautiful details of this new part of your family story.
