THE “FRESH 48” session…THE WHAT/WHY/HOW OF THESE POPULAR sessions for your brand new baby.

What is a fresh 48 session?

Simply put, a Fresh 48 session is a unique photography experience that takes place within the first 48 hours of a baby's life, typically in the hospital or birthing center where they were born. Unlike traditional newborn sessions, which are often done within the first two weeks of life, Fresh 48 sessions aim to capture the freshness and authenticity of those initial hours after birth. It's a time to document the tiny details, and the earliest connections with your new family member.

Why should I schedule a fresh 48 session?

The first couple of days after your baby’s birth are a whirlwind of emotions. It is equally the most exciting of moments for your family and also the most exhausting. I know that one of the most frequently asked questions in regards to this session type is “why”. When there is already so much going on, why is it important to have photos taken at the birthplace of my baby? Why not just wait for my newborn session at home?

There are SO many details worth capturing in these first hours after your baby’s birth. The details of the space (newborn bassinet, tiny ankle bands, hospital issued blankets and hats) are an important part of your baby’s birth story. Capturing your new baby and the space they were born preserve the memory of these first few days and the emotions and connection that takes place during this time.

How does a fresh 48 session work?

These sessions are booked with your due date as a place holder. I will just ask that you let me know via text message once you have arrived at the hospital or birth center. I will then coordinate with you or your care team about the best time to come in. These sessions are intentionally short, only about 30 minutes total and take place between 10am and 2pm for the best light. This is a time where you and your family need rest and as few interruptions as possible. I can capture every detail quickly in the space you are in. Preparing for my arrival is simple. I only suggest feeding and changing your baby before I arrive. I am happy to photograph baby in a favorite outfit or swaddle as well as in their diaper and any hospital/birth center gear also. If you would like any nursing photos we can take those first and if you have older children I love to include them too.

Additional FAQ’s

  • Can you do a session if my baby is in the NICU? Yes! It is best to ask the hospital what their current policy is regarding visitors in the NICU. If they allow it, I can capture your new baby within the NICU. If they don’t allow visitors, we will just switch to a newborn session once everyone is home.

  • When will we get our images? You will receive your fresh 48 images in less than a week. These are shorter sessions and I know new parents are looking forward to sharing photos of their brand new baby, so my turn time for these session types is less than usual.

  • How long have you been photographing babies? For 9 years professionally. I actually photographed newborns when I was in college at a local hospital prior to starting my own photography biz. I guess I could say I have been photographing newborns since 2002!

  • Do you have packages available? Yes! If you are interested in booking a fresh 48 session as well as a newborn or maternity session, let me know and I will include each session at a discounted rate.

  • Do you do birth sessions? Yes! I can typically book a birth per month depending on the time of year. Birth sessions are on call sessions so I want to make sure I don’t overbook.
